Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions and simplify the result.
How to check this result
Enter each numerator and denominator carefully. A denominator cannot be zero.
Method and assumptions
For addition and subtraction, fractions are expressed with a common denominator before the numerators are combined. Multiplication and division use different rules.
Before making a decision
A simplified result is easier to check and compare with another answer.
Use a common denominator
Method and inputs
For addition or subtraction, rewrite fractions with a common denominator before combining numerators. For multiplication, multiply numerators and denominators. For division, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Denominators cannot be zero.
Worked example
For 1/2 + 1/3, the common denominator is 6: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. For 2/3 ÷ 4/5, multiply 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6.
Limits and common mistakes
Enter whole-number numerators and denominators. To enter a mixed number such as 1½, first convert it to 3/2. Dividing by a zero-valued fraction is undefined, even if that fraction has a nonzero denominator.
How is a fraction simplified?
Divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. For 18/24, dividing both by 6 gives 3/4 without changing the value.
