Percentage to Grade Calculator

Convert earned points and total points to a percentage and common letter grade.

Scores and the grade scale used here

Method and inputs

Divide earned points by possible points and multiply by 100. This tool uses a simple illustrative scale: A ≥ 90%, B ≥ 80%, C ≥ 70%, D ≥ 60%, otherwise F. It does not read your school’s grading policy.

Worked example

Earning 42 out of 50 gives 84%, labelled B on this scale. Earning 45 out of 50 gives 90%, labelled A. Different institutions may assign different letters to the same percentage.

Limits and common mistakes

Possible points must be greater than zero. This tool rejects earned points above the total, so it does not model extra credit. Weighted assignments must be combined with their course weights rather than averaged blindly.

Does it round before assigning a letter?

No. The threshold comparison uses the calculated percentage before display rounding. A score slightly below 90% remains B on this illustrative scale.
