Split Bill Calculator

Split a restaurant or shared bill after tax and tip among people.

Result

How to check this result

Enter the bill, tax, tip and number of people before dividing the total.

Method and assumptions

The calculator adds any tax and tip to the base bill, then divides the complete total equally.

Before making a decision

For uneven shares, calculate the full total first and agree on each person’s share separately.

Tax, tips and equal shares

Method and inputs

Enter the bill before tax. Tax and tip percentages are both applied to that original bill, not to each other. Enter zero for either charge when it does not apply. The number of people must be a positive whole number.

Worked example

For a 120 bill, 8% tax and 15% tip: tax = 9.60, tip = 18.00 and total = 147.60. Four people pay 36.90 each. This is an equal split; the calculator does not assign individual menu items.

Limits and common mistakes

If the bill already includes tax, enter the full bill and zero tax to avoid charging it twice. A tip on the after-tax amount needs a separate calculation. Rounding shares can leave a cent or two to allocate.

How do I split unequal orders?

Assign each person their items, then distribute shared charges proportionally. For a 40 and 60 order with a 10 shared charge, the proportional totals are 44 and 66.
