Worked example
For 2, 4, 4 and 10, sum = 20 and count = 4, giving mean = 5. The middle sorted values are 4 and 4, so median = 4. Minimum is 2 and maximum is 10.
Limits and common mistakes
Every entry has equal weight. An unusually large value moves the mean more than the median. This tool does not calculate a weighted course grade; include weights in a separate calculation.
Can I enter negative numbers?
Yes. For −5, 0 and 5, the sum and mean are zero. A zero observation must stay in the list because it still counts toward the denominator.
