Convert bytes to bits before dividing
Method and inputs
Enter file size in megabytes (MB) and connection speed in megabits per second (Mbps). One byte contains eight bits, so ideal seconds = MB × 8 ÷ Mbps. This tool treats MB as decimal megabytes. It estimates the transfer at a constant speed; it does not measure your connection or download a file.
Worked example
A 750 MB file at 50 Mbps takes 750 × 8 ÷ 50 = 120 seconds, or two minutes, under ideal conditions. A 1.5 GB file is 1,500 MB in decimal units; at 25 Mbps the estimate is 480 seconds, or eight minutes.
Limits and common mistakes
Advertised internet speed may exceed the speed available to one download. Wi-Fi, server limits, other devices, packet overhead and connection changes can increase the actual time. Use a measured download speed where possible. MB/s and Mbps are different: 10 MB/s corresponds to 80 Mbps. A file described in MiB uses binary units and must be converted to MB for this tool.
Why does the result differ from my browser estimate?
A browser may update its estimate as speed changes and may use a different file-size convention. This calculator rounds to the nearest second and assumes a constant rate. A zero-size file gives zero time; speed must be above zero.
