Compare packages on the same basis
Method and inputs
Divide the total price by the quantity in the package. For individual items, use the item count. For bulk products, use the weight or volume consistently. A positive quantity is required; a zero price is allowed. The output does not impose a currency symbol. Use the same currency for both prices; this tool does not convert currencies.
Worked example
A pack of 12 costs 9.60: 9.60 ÷ 12 = 0.80 per item. A pack of 18 costs 12.60: 12.60 ÷ 18 = 0.70 per item. The larger pack costs more overall but less for each item. For bags weighing 500 g and 750 g, enter grams for both quantities, or convert both to kilograms first.
Limits and common mistakes
Compare products with similar quality and usable quantity. Delivery fees, discounts and taxes should be included in the total if they apply to the purchase. For a multi-buy offer, use the price and quantity for the whole offer. The output shows up to six decimal places and uses significant figures for smaller amounts. You can also convert both quantities to kilograms for a clearer comparison.
Is the lowest unit price always the best purchase?
Only if you need and can use the quantity. A cheaper large package can still cost more in total or create waste. Compare the usable amount, storage needs and your budget alongside the unit price.
